Congress could take up legislation this month to require a federal standard for labeling genetically modified food.
U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow says the public has a right to know that the food their families are eating contains genetically modified organisms or GMO’s.
“There’s lots of things we need to know as consumers,” says Stabenow. “And the question is how do we make sure we have all kinds of different pieces of information including about what is called genetically modified food.”
Stabenow, a Democrat, opposes Republican efforts in Congress to prevent states from passing their own GMO labeling laws, unless there’s a federal label law in place.
Food companies insist genetically modified foods are safe, and that labels would be misleading.
