Michigan is one of the lowest ranking states when it comes to investing in public health. According to a new report from the Citizens Research Council of Michigan, the results of underinvestment are clear.

The report, "An Ounce of Prevention: What Public Health Means for Michigan," looks at statewide trends in public health spending and programming.

Eric Lupher is the president of the CRC. He joined Stateside to discuss these trends and their impact on public health.

“We’re doing a really poor job,” Lupher said of Michigan's public health efforts. “We have very high rates of obesity, high rates of people who smoke, high rates of heart issues.”

Listen above for Lupher’s analysis of Michigan’s financing of public health programs, common misunderstandings about public health, and possible solutions moving forward.
