Preparations are underway for what could be a long gap between monthly benefits for some SNAP recipients.
Bob Wheaton is with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. He said the department is giving a heads up to organizations that they could see more people in need.
“We did reach out to food banks and food pantries and kind of gave them alert there could be the potential for there to be more need because of the benefits going out early for the month of February,” Wheaton said.
Wheaton says the department is concerned people might not budget their February food benefits, which they received last month.
The state gave people two months' worth of benefits in January because of the partial government shutdown.
“So then that results in them having a pretty significant gap in between when they received their February benefits and when they'll get their March benefits,” Wheaton said.
Wheaton says right now recipients should expect their benefits on their normal day in March.
