Several events are scheduled Thursday to look back at the beginning of the Flint water crisis. There’s also one looking forward.
On April 25th, 2014, the city’s drinking water source was switched to the Flint River. But improperly treated river water damaged pipes, releasing lead into Flint’s drinking water.
Dr. Mona Hanna Attisha revealed Flint’s tap water was exposing the city’s children to elevated levels of lead. She says a special registry is helping to see if efforts to mitigate exposure to the lead is working.
“It’s about identifying folks that were exposed and most importantly getting them connected, and supported and counted…and following them long-term to see how they’re doing,” says Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha.
The Flint Registry is modeled after other public health registries like the World Trade Center Disaster Registry.
The registry has pre-enrolled more than 6,000 Flint residents. It’s hosting sign up events across the city on Thursday.
