The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced Friday that an adult man has died from a vaping-related lung injury. It's the first such death to happen in the state.

On Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control reported a nationwide total of 18 vaping-related deaths and 1,080 cases so far. Those numbers do not include the Michigan death, or any other deaths that have been reported in other states since Tuesday.

30 cases have been reported in Michigan since August. The age range of those cases is 16-67.

The exact cause of the illnesses is unknown. The CDC has found that roughly 75 percent of the cases reported vaping marijuana products, either alone or in combination with nicotine.

MDHHS is urging people to "to consider refraining from vaping until the specific cause of the vaping-related severe lung injuries being reported nationwide has been identified."

The department launched an investigation into vaping-related illnesses in August.

As of Tuesday, selling flavored vaping products is illegal in Michigan, and the sale or use of e-cigarettes by minors has been banned since June
