The hard-hit Detroit Police Department is taking new measures to curb the spread of COVID-19.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said the new protocols should start this week.
“We want to be in a situation that when you come to work, you are greeted by somebody you takes your temperature,” Duggan said. “That if your temperature is over 100 degrees, we will immediately have you assessed by a medic team from the fire department.”
Officers and employees will be provided appropriate medical care if needed, Duggan said. Officers will also get called for symptom checks on their days off.
18 Detroit police employees have tested positive for COVID-19, and more than 300 officers are currently in quarantine.
The department’s homicide chief and a police dispatcher have died from the disease.
