Starting Thursday, the city of Flint is imposing a curfew to try to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
Two weeks ago, Flint was untouched by the coronavirus pandemic. As of Wednesday, Flint and Genesee County have recorded 249 positive COVID-19 cases and eight deaths.
Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley says he is taking the extraordinary step to imposing the 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew because his city is facing a “health crisis.” But the mayor says some city residents are not taking the governor’s Stay Home order seriously.
“Reports have been coming from around the city that people have been gathering in parking lots of convenience stores and other places, and that’s not acceptable,” Neeley said.
Neeley says violating the curfew is a misdemeanor, punishable with a $500 fine or 90 days in jail. The curfew is in place for the next 30 days.
People travelling to and from work will not be effected by the curfew.
