Governor Gretchen Whitmer said Monday that Michigan is making progress in fighting COVID-19. She noted a decline in the rate of positive cases.
“We are at the lowest percentage since the beginning of this crisis. And that’s because people are doing their part. We’ve got to remember that continuing to stay home and stay safe is the key to helping us lower the chance of a second wave and so that we can re-engage sectors of our economy sooner,” Whitmer said.
She added that testing for COVID-19 is critical to making decisions about reopening the economy. Without more information about the extent of the pandemic, it’s difficult to make the right decisions.
“Right now, Michigan is increasing our testing capacity, our tracing capacity, and our support for people who are infected by the virus. In just two weeks, Michigan has gone from 4,000 tests a day to 14,000,” Whitmer said during a news conference.
The state wants to get to 30,000 tests a day. Michigan just received support from the federal government to help reach that goal.
Right now, the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 stands at 47,552. The number of people killed by the virus is 4,584.
