CEO of West Michigan auto supplier sues feds over Affordable Care Act provisions

The leader of another Michigan business is suing the federal government over provisions of the Affordable Care Act.

John Kennedy, CEO of Kentwood-based Autocam Automotive, filed a complaint in a federal court in Grand Rapids Monday. In it, he says his company shouldn’t have to provide employees with health insurance that includes contraception coverage he considers “intrinsically wrong and gravely sinful”.

“As a Catholic and entrepreneur I believe the goal of the Affordable Care Act was good,” Kennedy said in a you tube video released to explain the lawsuit. “But the Affordable Care Act forces me to pay for things that violate my deeply held beliefs.”

“I can’t in good conscience choose between violating my beliefs and meeting my associate’s needs. It just doesn’t seem right,” Kennedy said.

Autocam employs more than 650 people in the United States.

This is not the first lawsuit of its kind. A similar suit is working its way through federal court in Detroit.
