Last month (November 15), Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced her office would charge 54-year-old Theodore Wafer with second degree murder in the death of 19-year-old Renisha McBride.
Wafer shot McBride in the face while she stood on his front porch in the early morning hours of November 2.
Today, there's a preliminary hearing in a Wayne County district court to determine whether there's enough evidence against Wafer for a trial. Judge David Turfe could make his determination at the end of today's hearing.
So far, Wafer's attorneys focused on McBride's use of marijuana and alcohol before her death.
McBride had crashed her car before showing up on Wafer's porch. More from the Associated Press:
Wafer's attorneys claim he shot Renisha McBride early on Nov. 2 because he feared for his life. She went to his home after crashing her car. Dr. Kilak Kesha conducted the autopsy and is the first witness. He says McBride was shot in the face. Her blood-alcohol level was about 0.22, more than twice the legal limit for driving, and she had been using marijuana. Kesha says the alcohol level would have been higher before the shooting.
