State Attorney General Bill Schuette is asking Michigan prosecutors how many untested rape kits are in their jurisdictions.
Schuette sent a letter to county prosecutors on Friday, asking them to report the information by October 9.
He said the data is the first step toward using $1.7 million the state Legislature has allocated for testing backlogged rape kits outside Wayne County.
Schuette said once backlogged kits have been eliminated, leftover funds will go toward aiding local prosecutions and providing services for victims.
This comes six years after more than 11,000 untested kits were discovered abandoned in a Detroit Police storage unit.
Those kits have since all been tested, with the help of $4 million the state kicked in to send them to private DNA testing labs.
