A new lawsuit is seeking to compel the federal government to come up with a national plan to protect the gray wolf, including those in the Upper Peninsula.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is expected to try to remove endangered species protection from nearly all gray wolves in the lower 48 states next month.
The Center for Biological Diversity Wednesday sued the agency for violating the Endangered Species Act.
“For the Great Lakes states it’s more about preventing the Fish and Wildlife Service from taking away the federal protections, because we know what happens when wolves go under state management,” says Collette Adkins, an attorney with the Center.
The state estimates there are more than 600 wolves in the Upper Peninsula.
