53rd District Court judge Theresa Brennan was arraigned Tuesday on three felony counts: tampering with evidence, perjury, and corruption in office.
The hearing was brief. Appearing by video conference, Judge David Guinn read Brennan her rights and asked if she understood them. She said she did.
Brennan is accused of destroying evidence of an alleged affair in her own divorce case in 2016, then lying about it under oath and later to investigators. She faces the prospect of up to five years in prison if convicted.
The next hearing in her case will be January 16th at 1:30.
There's also an ongoing Judicial Tenure Commission proceeding against Brennan, alleging those and other complaints, including accusations that she used court staff to do personal work for her, and was verbally abusive to people in her courtroom.
The judge in that proceeding has not yet made a recommendation to the Michigan Supreme Court, which would have the authority to remove her from office.
