Genesee County Sheriff: "You can’t take away people's constitutional rights."

Genesee County

Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson says law enforcement agencies must respect the constitutional rights of protesters.

There have been complaints in a number of cities of police being too aggressive to quell protests.

Appearing on Here & Now Tuesday, Swanson says things have changed for American policing.

“George Floyd changed American policing because we have to do things different,” says Swanson. “Listen to the people.  That’s what they want.  They want change and change comes by action.”

Swanson drew national attention over the weekend when he walked with demonstrators protesting the death of George Floyd while in police custody.

Unlike other Michigan cities, Flint has not seen any violence or vandalism connected to anti-police brutality marches.
