Philbert started as a research assistant at the university in 1995, and is currently the dean of the School of Public Health at Michigan, a position he has held since 2011.

In a statement, President Mark Schlissel thanked the provost search advisory committee, as well as interim Provost Paul Courant. He also praised Philbert for his successes at the School of Public Health.

"Dr. Philbert's success in leading our world-class School of Public Health for the last six years and his track record of high-impact scientific research, academic leadership and public service makes him an outstanding choice to be our next provost."

The provost serves as both the chief academic and budgetary officer for the university's Ann Arbor campus, and oversees its 19 schools and colleges.

The position was previously held by Martha Pollack, who left the position this year to become the president of Cornell University. If confirmed by the regents, Philbert would begin as provost on September 1.
