Gov. Rick Snyder has ordered Flags in Michigan to fly at half-staff in memory of the 26 people murdered in a Texas church on Sunday.

It’s the 19th time Snyder has signed such a proclamation.

“We live in a very challenging world,” Snyder told reporters today, “So I say, let’s all try to avoid those situations.”

Snyder says the focus should be on addressing mental health issues and terrorism.

Meanwhile, Michigan’s legislature has been working on loosening state laws to expand gun access and scrap concealed pistol training requirements.

Several Republican-backed bills to change Michigan’s gun laws stalled after last month’s massacre at an outdoor concert in Las Vegas.

Gun control advocates are calling on Michigan legislators to strengthen the state’s weapons laws.

“Our leaders must find the courage to take action,” says Linda Brundage, executive director of the Michigan Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence.
