Eastern Michigan University to open new comprehensive health center on campus

Catherine Shaffer

Eastern Michigan University will add comprehensive primary care and seven-day-a-week urgent care to its existing on-campus health service offerings in a new, $6.6 million health facility.

The project is a collaboration between EMU, Saint Joseph Mercy Health System, and Integrated Healthcare Associates, a multi-specialty health care group based in Ann Arbor.

Services currently offered in the University's Snow Health Center will be incorporated into the new facility, as well as Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS).

The new 25,700 square foot facility will be located on the northwest side of campus off Huron River Drive. In addition to providing services to students, staff, and the greater Ypsilanti community, the health center will offer hands-on training for the College of Health and Human Services.

Walter Kraft, vice president of communications for EMU, says the health center will be a significant improvement on services already offered on campus.

"We had a limited function in health care, only open Monday through Friday. This will be a facility that's open seven days a week, it will handle urgent care as well as primary care. The medical professionals coming in to operate this facility will be at a much higher level of skill than we were able to offer in the past," says Kraft.
