MSU Interim President Engler takes steps to remove Nassar's former boss

Michigan State University

Michigan State University Interim President John Engler has requested that Dr. William Strampel be stripped of his tenure.

Strampel is currently on medical leave, after stepping down as dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine in December. He was Dr. Larry Nassar's boss and did not enforce the protocols that were enforced the 2014 Title IX investigation cleared the former sports doctor of wrongdoing.

The request to remove Strampel from the faculty was submitted to the Office of the Provost Friday. A faculty hearing committee must find cause exists to revoke tenure before Strampel can be removed.

In a statement, Engler said: “William Strampel did not act with the level of professionalism we expect from individuals who hold senior leadership positions, particularly in a position that involves student and patient safety.

"Further, allegations have arisen that question whether his personal conduct over a long period of time met MSU’s standards. We are sending an unmistakable message today that we will remove employees who do not treat students, faculty, staff, or anyone else in our community in an appropriate manner.”

The university also says it will not cover Strampel’s legal expenses in relation to the Nassar matter.
