Attorney General Bill Schuette is denying any wrongdoing in connection with using staff in his state office to witness sales of inherited Virgin Islands property.

The Ingham County prosecutor reviewed a request to investigate Schuette, but later realized it would be better handled by the FBI.

But while marching in Fourth of July day parades, Schuette, who is running for governor, said the claim is merely a smear campaign.

“The Democrats and my opponents, they’re desperately behind so they’ll look for anything to throw. The kitchen sink, toilets, garbage, the whole thing. I just block and keep going,” Schuette said.

Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley is also running for governor in the Republican primary. Calley has called for an independent investigation of the real estate transactions.

The primaries will be held on August 7.
