Ferris State University professors are being ordered back to the classroom Tuesday after striking on the first day of classes Monday.
A Mecosta County Circuit Court judge ordered the educators to return to work as the university and the Ferris Faculty Association continue negotiations over a new contract.
Officials with the association say that roughly 300 tenured teachers walked the picket line calling for salary increases.
Charles Bacon is with the union. He says the teachers also want better classroom equipment.
“The nurses over in our health professions area run out of supplies for their clinicals by February,” Bacon said. “They are reusing supplies in a nursing program. This is a perennial problem we have.”
While professors will be back in the classroom Tuesday, the union says its members will continue to picket during free periods.
The contract expired on June 30. Non-tenured instructors are covered under a different agreement.
