Teresa Weatherall Neal announced Monday that she’s retiring as Superintendent of Grand Rapids Public Schools.
Weatherall Neal says she came to the decision after her sister suddenly passed way in July.
“It just made me know that I want to take more time with family and spend time with my grandkids,” Weatherall Neal said.
Weatherall Neal has been in that role for seven years, but she still has some things she wants to accomplish before she steps down.
One of those things is designating Grand Rapids as a Promise Zone, which would mean some Grand Rapids Public School graduates could get free college tuition at state schools.
“I want to have the authority in place ready to go so that we can begin to really figure out how much money it will take for all of our kids to go to college,” she said.
Weatherall Neal also wants to continue the school district’s transformation plan, even though she doesn’t think it will be finished by the time she retires, which will become official on June 30, 2019.
