Michigan State University trustee George Perles has resigned.
The 84-year-old Perles has dealt with Parkinson's disease for many years, and in his resignation letter says his age and health contributed to his decision.
Perles is also the school's former football coach and athletic director. A lawsuit filed in September accused Perles of covering up a sexual assault claim against former MSU sports doctor Larry Nassar. Perles has denied the allegations.
In a statement, Board of Trustees Chairman Mike Breslin said, "“I have known George for many years and his dedication to the university is beyond compare. He cares deeply about the people here and has worked selflessly over the years — whether that was as a player, coach, athletic director or board member — to push MSU to its greatest potential.”
Governor Snyder is expected to fill the seat before the end of the year. That means the seat will be a Republican appointee. Democrat Gretchen Whitmer takes office in January.
