A group of more than a dozen marijuana dispensaries claim the state of Michigan violated the law by rejecting their licensing applications.

The dispensaries are trying to sell recreational marijuana in Detroit and Traverse City, but both cities have a temporary ban in place.

The attorney for the dispensaries says the main issue is timing. Each dispensary says it submitted applications for state licenses before the respective cities decided to opt out of recreational sales.

The state says it was just following the rules that are in place.

As of last week, the state has issued 47 recreational marijuana licenses, and recreational marijuana has topped $24 million in retail sales.
