Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel will join more than a dozen other states in suing the U.S. Postal Service.
Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has instituted changes that include removing mail sorting equipment and mailboxes, and changing hours of operation. Nessel says the changes were made unlawfully.
“The post office has failed to seek an advisory opinion before it implemented these changes. It has to go to the Postal Regulatory Commission and it never did. The postmaster general is acting outside of his given authority in making these changes.”
Nessel says the lawsuit would require the Postal Service to put back mailboxes and sorting equipment that had previously been removed.
She says the lawsuit would stop changes from moving forward, "but also to rescind any of the changes that were made illegally. Whether that means the stripping out of sorting machines, the removal of mailboxes. Those things be put back into place as they were before these changes were ever made illegally in the first place.”
DeJoy said the changes are important for the “long term sustainability" of the Postal Service.
The Postmaster General also announced Tuesday that he will suspend some changes until after the election “to avoid even the appearance of any impact on election mail.”
