The state of Michigan will soon move forward with repairs to part of the remaining section of the Edenville Dam.
The dam’s failure on May 19 contributed to a 500-year flood event that damaged thousands of homes and businesses.
Last month, the state issued an emergency order to repair a section of the dam along the Tobacco River. But last week, the dam’s owners declined to make the repairs.
Liesl Clark is the director of the Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy. She says the state is now able to make the repairs itself.
“The intent is to do construction work here in the fall to make sure that we are doing everything we can from a public safety perspective before we get into spring storms,” says Clark.
