Confirmed cases of COVID-19 continue to rise in Michigan, with 2,367 new cases reported on Tuesday. Over the past week, the state has hit a new peak for the average number of new daily cases, though deaths remain far below where they were in the spring.
Health officials across the state have been urging people to take precautions to stop the spread of the virus: to put off gatherings, keep a distance from others and wear a mask.
Across the state, there was a 27% increase in the number of people hospitalized because of the virus over the past week.
“To be clear, the majority of these people are going to survive,” said Adam London, administrative health officer for the Kent County Health Department, in a video posted last week. “However, there will be fewer successful outcomes if the hospitals become overwhelmed.”
Leaders from the state's major hospitals issued a statement last week, urging people to "do the right thing" to stop the virus. Overall, hospitals in the state have plenty of capacity to treat patients at the moment, but some worry that if cases continue to rise, that will change.
