The Detroit Lions have a new head coach. The team announced Wednesday it has agreed on contract terms with Dan Campbell.
Campbell comes to the Lions from New Orleans where he was the Saints' assistant head coach and tight ends coach. He has 11 years of NFL coaching experience.
Campbell is also a former Lions player. He was a tight end for Detroit from 2006 to 2008.
In a statement, team owner Sheila Ford Hamp said, "Dan knows the rigors of professional football and what it takes to be successful. He will help promote the culture we want to establish across our organization, while also bringing with him high energy, a respect for the game and an identity with which everyone can align themselves."
Campbell's hiring comes less than a week after the team announced Brad Holmes as its new executive vice president and general manager. Holmes spent 18 seasons with the Rams' organization, most recently as the team's director of college scouting.
The Lions fired head coach Matt Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn in November. Lions offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell stepped in as interim head coach.
The team finished the 2020 season with a record of 5-11 and missed the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year.
