Ann Arbor residents will soon be able to enjoy cats and coffee in one place

Miranda Bono is on track to open the very first "cat cafe" in Michigan.

"A cat cafe is basically a coffee shop and a cat rescue center in one place," says Bono.

Cat cafes originated in Asia and traveled to the United States, with the first opening in California last fall.

"The Cat's Meow" cafe will be located in Ann Arbor.

All the cats will be available for adoption, but if you can't take one home, Bono says the cafe can still provide a great way to give the cats attention that they may not get in an adoption center.

And for those who are worried about animals and edible items in the same space, Bono says they're working closely with the health department. The space will include an airtight vestibule in the middle and guests have the choice as to whether or not they want to bring their drink into the cat area.

The cafe is a partnership with Mason Jar Coffee Co. out of Linden and Bono is still in the process of finding a rescue center to work with.

Bono is a cat lover herself and she hopes to share the therapeutic quality of interacting with them.

"I've always said if I was going to open a business this is what I would do."
