Governor Rick Snyder could veto his first bill this week. He faces a Friday morning deadline to sign or a reject measure sent to him by the Republican-controlled Legislature.

The bill would make it difficult for state agencies to enact rules that are stricter than federal standards without first getting permission from the Legislature.

Sara Wurfel is the governor’s press secretary.

“The governor is a proponent of regulatory reform and is generally supportive of the concept,” Wurfel said. “But the team is looking at it as potentially too broad and too encompassing as presented, so right now it’s undergoing a deep review just to determine how it would affect Michigan’s ability to do what it needs to do.”

It’s not clear yet what the effect would be on Snyder's relationship with legislative Republicans – some of whom are suspicious of a GOP governor who is not quite as conservative as they are.  But Wurfel said she doesn’t think a veto would have a negative effect.

“I think there’s a record of accomplishment and collegiality that has been very strong and will continue to be strong,” said Wurfel. “The governor is very much a fan of working together and being inclusive and not divisive, and that’s going to be something that absolutely continues.”

The governor has vetoed a few line items in spending bills since he took office, but this would be the first time he vetoes an entire bill.
