According to a press release from the office of Michigan Senator Carl Levin, the federal Department of Transportation has granted $3.6 million to the St. Clair County Road Commission for repairs on a section of Smiths Creek Road. Work will take place on a 2.6 mile stretch of the road and will include replacement of a bridge spanning the Pine River.

“These funds will allow the St. Clair County Road Commission to undertake some badly needed road reconstruction,” said Levin. “Such projects are sound investments in Michigan’s future economic growth, and represent a strong partnership between the federal government and local organizations like the St. Clair County Road Commission. This grant will not only improve Smiths Creek Road, but will also create jobs, modernize Michigan’s infrastructure, and help strengthen our economy long-term.” The grant comes as part of the highly successful Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) competitive grant program, which funds transportation projects that create jobs and have significant economic impact around the country. DOT technical and professional experts examine all TIGER applications to determine the most effective uses for limited federal funds. All projects are subject to detailed oversight and performance-measurement plans to ensure successful outcomes.
