Rick Santorum is leading in a new poll of likely Republican presidential primary voters in Michigan. The primary is in two weeks.
A poll by Public Policy Polling finds 39% of likely primary voters (70% Republicans/30% Democrats and Independents) say they support the former Pennsylvania United States Senator.
Meanwhile Michigan native son and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney only polls about 24 percent. Romney won the Michigan presidential primary in 2008.
Texas congressman Ron Paul scored 12%. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich garnered 11%
The poll had a margin of error of 4.9%
Pollster Tom Jensen describes Santorum’s support as broad, but not deep.
“We found on this poll that 53 percent of voters are open to changing their minds in the next two weeks. There’s a lot of room for volatility," says Jensen.
Jensen says Newt Gingrich had similar poll numbers in Florida just after he won the South Carolina primary. Gingrich lost badly in Florida, after Romney and pro-Romney super pac campaigns flooded Florida with negative ads aimed at Newt Gingrich.
