Foggy roads in SE Michigan
Authorities are urging motorists to drive more cautiously in southeast Michigan because of heavy fog that's
blanketing the area. The National Weather Service issued a dense fog advisory for Monday morning for Detroit, Ann Arbor, Pontiac, Lapeer, Port Huron, Monroe, Adrian and other area communities. In places, visibility was greatly reduced because of the fog. It comes as the state faces another day of unseasonably warm weather.
Reviewing life without parole for juveniles
A panel will explore moral and legal aspects of sentencing juveniles on trial as adults to natural life in prison without parole. The University of Michigan Law School's Juvenile Justice Clinic will convene the panel from 7-9 p.m. Monday on the school's Ann Arbor campus. Attorney Deborah LaBelle, American Friends Service Committee member Natalie Holbrook and American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan communications director Rana Elmir are on the panel. Donnie Logan, whose sentence of life without parole was commuted, also is on the panel. LaBelle on behalf of the ACLU has represented prisoners sentenced to life in prison for crimes committed when they were minors. She has said more than 350 inmates in Michigan prisons are serving life sentences without parole for crimes committed in their youth.
A discussion about the Emergency Manager law
Michigan's emergency manager law will be discussed by a panel at the University of Michigan's Ford School of Public Policy. Deputy state treasurer Roger Fraser will join Benton Harbor emergency manager Joseph Harris, Flint Mayor Dayne Walling and Michigan Forward Chief Executive Brandon Jessup during Monday afternoon's program in Ann Arbor. Jessup's group is working to repeal the year-old law. State election officials are deciding if opponents of the law have gathered enough valid voter signatures to temporarily suspend the measure and put it before voters in the November election. The law allows a state-appointed administrator to take over the finances of fiscally troubled municipalities and public school districts. Emergency managers also have the power to dismiss local elected leaders and tear up and restructure union contracts.
