Mickey Blashfield, Ambassador Bridge owner Matty Moroun's director of government relations and head of the Moroun-financed group "The People Should Decide" released a statement following a report from the Detroit Free Press on a possible deal between the UAW and Moroun.
The report said that "according to a senior auto executive and several local political leaders" Moroun and the UAW are working on a deal that will funnel money into the Proposal 2 campaign (collective bargaining) for the UAW's support of Proposal 6 (the bridge vote).
Here's Blashfield's statement:
"I'll leave the rumors and speculation to the unnamed sources in recent press coverage. Here's what I know: People are finally waking up to the fact that Governor Snyder cut a deal disproportionally benefiting Canadian industry at the expense of Michigan taxpayers and Michigan workers. Canada will control who gets construction jobs on the bridge, and, thanks to Governor Snyder's request for a Buy America waiver, American steel might be entirely excluded from the project. Despite the rhetoric from bridge proponents, the economic benefits for Michigan are entirely unclear-at a time while our economy remains fragile and our fiscal future remains uncertain. So it's no surprise groups that bridge the political spectrum, labor unions and fiscal conservatives, would support a YES on Proposal 6. We all just want to see the people make the choice whether this deal-so clearly counter to Michigan's interests-is worth pursuing."
