The U.S. Post Office is now looking into the hundreds of undelivered absentee ballots in southeast Michigan.
A spokesman for the United States Postal Service’s Office of Inspector General says it’s directed its special agents in Michigan to contact city clerks in Auburn Hills and Roseville to ask about the undelivered absentee ballots.
The clerks say they mailed thousands of absentee ballots earlier this month. But an unusually small percentage of the ballots have been returned. And the clerks have received calls from many voters who say they haven’t received the ballots.
Auburn Hills city clerk Terry Kowal says she can't simply void everybody's ballots and send out new ones - because lots of people have already voted.
Instead, she's telling city residents to call her office, if they should have gotten a ballot, and didn't, and request a new one. The old ballot will be marked "spoiled" and a new one sent out.
The post office’s inspector general’s office also plans on talking to local postal service employees.
