Ford is investing $10 million to boost community programs in southwest Detroit.
The centerpiece of what the company calls “Operation Brighter Future” is the planned Ford Resource and Engagement Center, at the Mexicantown Mercado.
Mayor Dave Bing says that will be a huge boost for the neighborhood. It's one of several targeted by his administration as "demonstration areas" for its Detroit Works Project, meant to shore up some of the city's stronger neighborhoods.
“This building, known as the Mexicantown Mercado, has sat empty for several years,” Bing said. “And the new Ford Resource and Engagement Center will certainly add to the revitalization of southwest Detroit.”
“This center, we expect is going to be a hub of entrepreneurship, workforce training, capacity-building, arts, and culture,” said Mark Fields, Ford’s Chief Operating Officer.
Ford is also “adopting” the nearby city-run Patton Recreation Center, and will provide funding for youth programming there.
The automaker will also donate two vehicle chassis for use as city ambulances.
