Gun rights supporters rallied on the state capitol steps today. They’re upset about calls to tighten the nation’s gun laws.
Many people at the rally believe the new push for a ban on "military style" assault weapons and limits on the size of magazines and clips is a domestic threat against the U.S. Constitution. Many at the rally had hand guns strapped to their legs or rifles slung across their backs.
Jack Griffes says gun rights supporters like him must be ready to defend their Second Amendment rights with their weapons. But he says first they should try to work within the system and convince state and federal elected officials to respect their rights.
“For some reason, illiteracy is rank in our country today,” Griffes told the crowd, “People can’t read and understand common English. ‘Shall not be infringed’ seems pretty easy to understand.”
Griffes says Second Amendment supporters should inundate their elected leaders with emails and letters to respect gun rights.
“I know that an individual person can make a difference….it took me a long time to see that…but I know that it can make a difference,” says Griffes.
There are at least two more pro-gun rallies scheduled for later this Spring in Lansing.
