This week in Michigan politics, Christina Shockley and Jack Lessenberry discuss the results of a financial review of Detroit, a bill to add more people to the sex offender registry in the state, and how the Secretary of State will allow certain undocumented immigrants to get drivers licenses and state IDs this week.
The financial review team looking into Detroit's finances issued its report yesterday. It found the city is in a state of financial emergency and doesn't have a workable plan to get out of the mess. Shockley wondered what this will mean for Detroit.
Lessenberry says, “Well of course the governor could choose to do something else or try to recraft the consent agreement but nobody believes he’ll do that. He’ll probably appoint an emergency manager.”
In Lansing yesterday, the state House voted for a bill to add more people to the sex offender registry in the state. The bill would add people convicted of crimes such as possessing child pornography and indecent exposure to the registry.
While the bill passed overwhelmingly in the House, Lessenberry thinks this hurts more people than this helps. As he stated in his essay yesterday, “Posting former offenders’ pictures and addresses seems to me to be nothing more than a way to make sure they can never be rehabilitated.”
Finally, Shockley and Lessenberry discussed how certain undocumented immigrants will be able to apply for Michigan driver’s licenses and state IDs starting this week.
