The Flint City Council has taken a first step toward taking back control of the city’s finances.
The council last night unanimously passed a resolution asking Governor Rick Snyder to remove the city’s emergency manager.
Flint city officials want the governor to replace the emergency manager with a transition team to phase out state control of the city’s finances over two years.
Mayor Dayne Walling says major changes have put the city in a good position to succeed.
“It’s time for our community to be in the guiding position as we look at our long-term decisions,’ says Walling.
Flint has been under state control for nearly a year-and-a-half. The city has a budget deficit of almost $20 million.
Governor Snyder’s office says he’ll consider the city council’s request, but says there’s still a lot of work to be done in Flint.
