Grand Rapids native and former Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land has announced her intention to run for U.S. Senate.

She made the announcement on her Facebook page:

I would like to thank everyone who has been encouraging me to run for US Senate. Representing our magnificent state of Michigan and your interests in Congress would be the greatest honor. We need conservative leadership now more than ever because of high unemployment, huge deficits, and a spendthrift Congress. Beginning today, I am putting together a campaign strategy and a policy team. I will be filing the appropriate paper work by July 1 to become a Republican primary candidate. Now is our chance to win. I eagerly look forward to speaking with you face-to-face about ways to launch our country to prosperity while defending our liberty and freedoms.

Her announcement marks the first major Republican candidate to throw their hat in the ring for the open Michigan Senate seat after Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI) announced his retirement earlier this year.

U.S. Rep. Gary Peters is the front-runner for the Democratic nomination.

U.S. Representatives Mike Rogers and Justin Amash are other possible Republican candidates who could make a run.

Michigan Radio's Lindsey Smith is following this story and will have more for us later today. We'll also hear more later today from Michigan Radio's Stateside team.
