Some people in Ypsilanti Township want a name change. They believe the name "Ford Lake Township" would provide "a stronger identity that would help improve economic growth."
Tom Perkins for The Ann Arbor News reported that the idea grew out of discussions between residents Mary Gooden, Kaffa Hayes, Amy Boyd and Samantha Towler:
The group only began mobilizing and circulating petitions last week, but so far they have signatures from three Board of Trustees members, Gooden said.
The group needs 6,000 signatures to get the Board of Trustees to even consider the approval.
Perkins wrote that people in the township tried a name change before - to no avail. The group says they'll have a website for the initiative up in a few days.
If the township did change its name, there would be a few cultural references they would lose connection to. Like this and maybe that.
