By the end of this month, the city of Flint could have its first new master plan in more than 50 years.
A master plan is a guide for community leaders to chart a city’s future economic development and neighborhood growth.
But Flint’s current master plan was written in 1960, when the city’s population was twice its current size. The plan also envisioned an economy that has long since disappeared from Flint.
Megan Hunter is Flint’s chief planning officer. She expects this new master plan will actively guide Flint for the next 20 years.
“My goal is to really to make sure this is a plan that doesn’t sit on a shelf,” hunter said at a community meeting on the plan last week.
Hundreds of Flint residents have weighed in on the new master plan at dozens of community meetings in recent months.
City planners and Flint’s elected leaders will spend the next few weeks reviewing the public’s suggestions on the master plan.
The final draft plan will be going before the city council on October 15th. The council is expected to approve the plan in three weeks.
