When the U.S. Supreme Court recently handed down its 5-4 decision in McCutcheon vs. Federal Election Commission, it struck down the overall limits on how much donors can give to candidates, parties, and political action committees.
 
Writing for the majority, Chief Justice John Roberts pointed to free speech, saying that trumps concerns about who's getting a bigger voice in government.
 
Writing in dissent, Justice Stephen Breyer argued that the decision harms basic First Amendment rights for everyday citizens – their right to be heard in our political process.
