The White House says more than 270,000 Michiganders signed up for health insurance under Obamacare.
The six month sign-up period ended a month ago, but this is the first state breakdown of the numbers.
In Michigan, more women than men signed up for health insurance coverage, with people over the age of 45 making up about half of those signing up.
Eighty-seven percent of the people getting coverage through Obamacare in Michigan are getting financial assistance from the federal government to help pay for their health insurance policies.
Erin Knott is the state director of Enroll America. She’s says she’s thrilled by the numbers.
“Over 272,000 people that didn’t have health insurance were able to take advantage of the open enrollment period and obtain quality, affordable health care,” says Knott. “People are having for the first time ever that piece of mind that goes with having health insurance.”
What’s not clear is how many Michiganders signed up for Obamacare after losing their old health insurance plans when the Affordable Care Act took effect last year.
Nationally, more than 8 million people used Obamacare to get health insurance. The next enrollment period begins in November.
Also in Michigan, during the past month, 199,862 people have been enrolled in the state’s expanded Medicaid program ‘Healthy Michigan’.
