The Ann Arbor school board is requesting that the state legislature repeal a controversial gun law.
The law allows someone with a concealed pistol license to openly carry a gun into a school. Carrying a concealed weapon into a school is still illegal.
The board took the action after a man with a concealed pistol license attended a high school performance last week, bearing an openly displayed, holstered weapon.
The man, Joshua Wade, was among those who addressed the board during the public comment period of the meeting.
"The more good people who carry in our schools, the fewer criminals will see those schools as easy targets," said Wade.
More than a dozen people attended the meeting showing guns. Many are members of a group called Michigan Open Carry.
Many other people at the meeting, however, said guns have no place in schools, concealed or not.
"The children come to learn, not to be afraid," said retired teacher Cheryl Ervin. "Can you imagine kids coming to school who are afraid of guns, how that child must feel every day? They can't concentrate."
Several Ann Arbor police officers were posted at the meeting, which was moved to the auditorium of Huron High School to accommodate a larger than usual crowd.
