State lawmakers are taking aim at elk and moose poachers in Michigan.
Lawmakers are considering tripling the fine poachers pay if they are caught illegally killing elk or moose in Michigan. Fines will also rise for bear and eagles.
Drew Youngedyke is with the Michigan United Conservation Clubs. He says legitimate hunters are not illegally killing big game to make a profit.
“But some people obviously are doing that,” says Youngedyke, “and we want to make sure that we’re preventing them from doing that with these higher penalties.”
Under a proposed law, a poacher would be banned from hunting in Michigan for life on their second offense.
