The Detroit Police Department today announced a new program that lets officers to take home retired cruisers at the end of their shifts.
Old patrol cars will be refurbished then assigned to officers who live in Detroit.
Sergeant Cassandra Lewis said the cars will let people know there's a police presence in their communities.
“It gives [residents] the feeling that officers are invested in the neighborhood, because they live in the neighborhood," Lewis said.
Lewis said the department wants to assign 20 of the retired vehicles by the end of the year.
Officer Baron Coleman of the city's Eighth Precinct was the first to receive one of the take-home vehicles.
The department said Metrotech Automotive Group refurbished the 2004 Crown Victoria free-of-charge.
It has everything Coleman needs to perform his duties.
