There’s less than two weeks before Flint’s primary for mayor.
Today, another candidate jumped in the race.
City councilwoman Monica Galloway was elected to the city council two years ago. Now she’s seeking the city’s top elected job.
But she admits the decision to get in the race for mayor wasn’t easy. She says she didn’t have the “courage” to start a campaign back when other candidates were collecting signatures to get a spot on the primary ballot.
However Galloway says she feels with the city’s Receivership Transition Advisory Board and city administration, “the right dynamics are in place” for her to run for mayor.
Galloway says the qualifications of the other four candidates in the race were not a determining factor in her decision to run.
The four candidates on the primary ballot are Councilmen Wantwaz Davis and Eric Mays, businesswoman Karen Weaver and incumbent Mayor Dayne Walling.
The top two vote-getters in the primary will move on to the November election.
Galloway is confident she can convince enough Flint voters to write-in her name to win one of those two spots.
“We have a smart community. And so writing someone’s name is really not that difficult. Especially if it is important to them,” says Galloway. “I think I have a great opportunity…a great chance.”
Galloway did not rule out continuing her write-in campaign into the November election if she fails to win in August.
