Hillary Clinton is bringing her presidential campaign to Flint Sunday.
But her rival for the Democratic presidential nomination is also setting up shop in town this weekend.
Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders will top the Democratic side of Michigan’s presidential primary next month.
On Friday, a handful of volunteers were busy making hand-made signs in the new Bernie Sanders campaign office in Flint on Friday.
Ryan Hughes is the state director for the Sanders campaign. While he says they don’t want to politicize Flint’s water crisis, Hughes admits the city’s lead tainted drinking water is drawing attention to Flint.
“I think we all wish it was for a different reason,” Hughes says, “but to the extent it can highlight the difficult issues that Flint is facing, I think that’s a positive thing.”
Sanders has called for Michigan Governor Rick Snyder to resign over his handling of Flint’s water crisis.
The Michigan Democratic Party and others have echoed the call for the governor to resign.
The Michigan Republican Party has attacked those calling for Snyder to step down:
“Democrats should put aside politics for once and place their focus on helping the people of Flint. While there are investigations underway that will hold those responsible accountable for their actions, everyone else needs to put their focus on finding a way to solve this crisis.”
Still, Clinton is expected to renew her criticism of the Republican governor when she makes a campaign stop in Flint on Sunday.
