Fact check and analysis of the 2nd presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump

Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton faced off in the second presidential debate Sunday night at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

This debate took the form of a town meeting.

Half of the questions came from town meeting participants who, according to the Commission on Presidential Debates,  were “uncommitted voters selected by the Gallup Organization.”

The other half of the questions came from the moderators. The debate was moderated by Martha Raddatz of ABC and Anderson Cooper of CNN. Both agreed to include questions submitted and voted on by the public. Those questions were submitted here.

The candidates had two minutes to respond and there was an additional minute for the moderator to facilitate further discussion.

NPR's politics team, with help from reporters and editors who cover national security, immigration, business, foreign policy and more, live annotated the debate. Portions of the debate with added analysis are highlighted below, followed by context and fact checking from NPR reporters and editors.

(By the way, you have until Tuesday, October 11 to register to vote if you haven't done so already. Find out how here.)
