The deadline for Flint’s commercial water customers to pay their delinquent bills was today.
Flint’s commercial customers owe the city more than a million dollars. The city may start the process of cutting off their water service next week.
On Friday, the owners of two apartment complexes paid nearly $30 thousand each to bring their accounts up to date.
“We’re glad that these account holders have stepped up and done the right thing,” said David Sabuda, Flint’s Interim Chief Financial Officer.
But there are several apartment complexes that still owe the city money.
Flint Mayor Karen Weaver says its “not fair” that some renters may be forced out of apartments, because complex owners haven’t paid their water bills.
“We have people who have done what they’re supposed to do and paid their money…it’s not fair,” says Weaver.
Flint is under pressure from the state to get 70% of its water customers current on their bills. But as of now, the city is far below that threshold.
Rich Baird is a special adviser to the governor. He says the city is making progress.
“As long as there is progress being made, even if it isn’t at the 70% percent level, we have an obligation to continue that partnership on behalf of the residents of Flint,” says Baird.
Flint officials asked the State Treasury Department to extend water relief credits be extended until the water in Flint is declared safe to drink without a filter. The credits are set to end on December 31st.
